- The Florida Elections Commission has unanimously found probable cause
that Farm Sanctuary, a national animal rights group, violated state
campaign finance law.
- The Commission levied 210 counts against the group – one for each check
sent in response to two mailings soliciting funds for a Constitutional
Amendment initiative.
- SCI applauds the Commission for charging the group with violating the
state law that requires all contributions go through the official
campaign treasurer. Voters and
donors must be protected from any group apparently willing to play fast
and loose with election laws.

- Problems caused by wildlife imbalances are getting more widespread
coverage in general news media:
- ABC News broadcast journalist Peter Jennings devoted an entire
episode of “In Search of America,” to conflicts between Idaho ranchers
and reintroduced gray wolf packs.
- The Knoxville News-Sentinel examined the problems caused when
communities are overrun by coyotes.
- The Orange County Register reports that 329 human-bear conflicts have
been reported so far this year.
- Notably, The Dallas Morning News reports New Mexico has seen a drop in
bear-human conflicts. New Mexico
Game and Fish attributes this to the fact that, in the past year,
officers and sportsmen harvested 131 problem bears.

- According to cnn.com, fur’s revival in the fashion industry this year
has, not surprisingly, drawn the ire of the antis, including fashion
designer and PETA blow horn Stella McCartney, who claims her own
garments are “cruelty free,” although her label is partly owned by Gucci,
which makes extensive use of leather.
- However, fellow designer Karl Lagerfeld sees no problem with fur’s
use. “It should be handled in the
nicest way,” he advised, “but as long as we eat meat and wear leather, I
don’t even think there is a subject to discuss.”
- CNN is conducting a poll to determine public opinion on the use of fur
in clothing. To vote for wearing
fur and against the rants of the activists, go to http://asia.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/europe/10/29/design360.mccartney.fur/index.html
and click “yes” on the “Quickvote” box.
