The Leadership School
The American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) - West (located near Jackson, Wyoming) is accredited by the American Camping Association as a Conference Retreat Center. The school offers five teacher sessions and one student session for ages 16-18. Each session provides successful applicants with challenging experiences in the fields of wildlife ecology, management and conservation. Additionally, there are sessions covering firearm safety, fly tying, wilderness survival, archery, indoor climbing wall, outdoor interpretive techniques, Project WILD and outdoor ethics. A registration fee of $800 covers meals and lodging plus round trip transportation to and from the Jackson, WY airport.
Since 1976 Safari Club International has promoted conservation as a way of life to 5,175 teachers and 1,296 high school students. The mission of the American Wilderness Leadership School is to offer a national/international outdoor instructional program that concentrates on natural resource management and provides the participant a base of knowledge to better comprehend and evaluate today's and future conservation issues.
The deadline to apply to a local SCI chapter is April 1, 2010. There is no deadline if you seek sponsorship from the SCIF Education Department or are being self-sponsored.
